I'm not talking about tea parties involving little children and Teddy Bears. I'm talking about the new political protest movement.
Why are these Tea Parties stupid?
Because they are named after the Boston Tea Party, an event in which colonial Americans protested England's taxation without representation. That mean's that their own elected officials were not making the taxes law, but government in Britain.
These current Tea Party protesters are protesting taxes proposed by our democratically elected officials or taxation WITH representation.
Does anyone else get why this is stupid?
I hope you do.
I hope these people realize why this is stupid because I think this language is harmful.
The Boston Tea Party was a harbinger of secession. The last time someone tried that when we were a unified, self-governing nation, things didn't turn out so well. For them.

The South will rise again.
I work at a school, and a parent pulled their son out of school all day today (when he had a test) to help set up one of these things. I, too, was confused as to how this was a tea party, unless they are worried about taxes on their tea. Maybe they should have driven their cars into Lake Superior or thrown their checkbooks and debit cards there instead, because they were really vocal about the bank and automobile company bailouts today. Well, and Amendment XVI, but that was created with representation as well.
Yeah, I'm with you: confused as to how it all relates.
