The Roots of Orchis -- Some Things Plural
8/10
Ever work all night, then drive home through a wintry dawn, enveloped in the sleeping world around you? I have, and it sounds like Some Things Plural by instrumental band, The Roots of Orchis. I think I initially found The Roots of Orchis by searching the term "bands with two bassists" on webcrawler. Webcrawler was the greatest search engine of all time and Google is a poser. Anyway, I came across Roots of Orchis, who indeed had two bassists instead of a bassist and a guitarist. Being a bassist (and not yet then a guitarist), I was quite excited by that fact, and picked up the band's then latest album, Some Things Plural. I assumed the "some things" to mean bassists. While the band has two bassists, The Roots of Orchis are more interested in exploring a chilled out, rhythm-focused sound, than dueling bass chops. Hence, the album cover is a perfect visual representation of Some Things Plural's sound. Wintry, early morning music, the last thing you hear before you get out of your car, twist the key in the knob, and tuck into bed, exhausted and warm, the air of morning cooling your face before you drift off to dreamland, "roll the dice man, baby needs a new ellipsis"'s record-scratching and gentle hip-hop beat rolling around in your head before the bass lines send you off to sleep.
