FIlmshake Is Watching 1999's 8MM

8mm nic cage and joaquin phoenix
In 1999, director, Joel Schumacher, coming off the biggest disgrace of his career, 1997's Batman and Robin, released 8mm to the world. This Nic Cage-starring film made a financial profit, but critics found 8mm, whose plot revolves around Cage's character diving into the underbelly of the pornographic industry to find a missing girl, to be odious. Those critics don't know their ass from a whole in the ground. 8mm is a deep meditation on the price of justice, the problem of evil, and myriad other dark and heavy topics that apparently scared Hollywood in 1999, and still scare them now. Jordan Courtney and I just released what I believe to be our greatest episode for Filmshake - The '90s Movies Podcast, and it's about this very film. It's the longest episode we've ever released, but I feel like it had to be. We break down the film beat by beat, explore its themes, get philosophical, praise and gush over Cage, and I offer insights given by Schumacher himself through interviews and commentary he did after the film was released. I truly believe this is the definitive podcast episode for this film.
Also...to kick off the episode, we talk for ten minutes about our punishment film, 1999's The Other Sister, which is...not as good as 8mm. All this and more, only on Filmshake!
