Friday Music Drops, 06/26/26

Introducing a new series of posts that I'll likely abandon after just this third entry: it's Friday Music Drops! The idea is that every Friday I will listen to the handful of new release songs my Spotify account recommends to me based on my previous listens and write my quick, off the cuff thoughts on each, without really doing any research, so that these posts are as pure as possible. Here we go!

Beck -- "Ride Lonesome (featuring Sierra Ferrell)"

I have no idea who Sierra Ferrell is. Her backup vocals are fine on "Ride Lonesome," which sounds like a more countrified take on the folk music Beck presented on "Sea Change" and "Morning Phase." The song is solid. Beck can make good songs in this genre in his sleep. His voice is aged, but still working well, and upon further investigation, there's an original version of this song featuring only his voice, and I actually think I like that one better--it's got more of the dreamy, Beck-folk atmosphere.

Chelsea Wolfe -- "The Dark"

Speaking of folk, Chelsea Wolfe has sometimes touched upon it throughout her career, but also hard rock and electronica, though always tinged with a bit of strange darkness. I don't know if "The Dark" presages an upcoming album (I hope so), but it starts off in more of a minimalist folk vein before building to a full band rock sound, then ending with just Chelsea's voice and a keyboard. This doesn't really sound like a B-side from her last album, which was a lot more menacing. I don't know what "The Dark" is for, but I like it.

Loathe -- "Fangs"

It's been quite a while since Loathe's last full-length, which I did like. Describing that album's genre is tough, and it's no easier to do so with "Fangs," which appears to be a single from their upcoming full-length, A Stranger to You. "Fangs" is a funky hard rock song, with plenty of dynamic changes and a progressive rock edge. It's a fun and unexpected track, and the first of A Stranger to You's singles to feature absolutely no screaming.

Frozen Crown -- "The One"

Frozen Crown is a fun, female-fronted symphonic-metal band from Italy, and the upbeat and uptempo "The One" not only fits that mold well, but sounds Lord of the Rings-inspired. I think it is an anthem for the Nazgûl. Cool!

Everything Is Recorded, Peter Gabriel, IDK -- "Beyond the Brilliant Haze"

This song is mostly modern hip hop, which I mostly...loathe. I think the song was recommended to me because Peter Gabriel inexplicably sings the chorus twice, and I have listened to Peter Gabriel's 80s output for probably a full week of listening hours on Spotify. This song is not for me, though Pete sounds remarkably good for an old dude.

Finally, apropos of nothing, here is Stephen Wilson Jr.'s performance of the song, "Gary," from CMA Fest last night.
