Starflyer 59 -- My Island
7/10
Jason Martin's back with My Island, Starflyer 59's fourth album in four years. This time, he's just pursuing a straight-forward, high-energy rock sound. He's got the tightest rhythm section he's ever had in Steven Dail on bass (likely trying desperately to escape Project 86 at this point), with Trey Many (of His Name is Alive!) and Trevor Monks splitting drum duties. The bass and drums are clearer and punchier in the mix than on any Starflyer album before, and a definite highlight here. Martin even found Josh Dooley from Leave Here a Stranger to add some keyboard touches to the songs. Overall, though, this is just a fun, quick, insubstantial Starflyer album, with some good songs that don't add up to a greater whole. Hey, one of these reviews had to be short!
