The Rocke-Who? The Rocketeer! On FIlmshake!
I first saw The Rocketeer on The Magical World of Disney, right before my 11th birthday. I enjoyed the film immensely, but my enduring memory from that viewing is that Jennifer Connelly was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen, and that my body suddenly notified me that I liked girls, particularly Jennifer Connelly in The Rocketeer. I watched the movie often after that in Disney Channel repeats (the GOOD Disney channel from the late 80s and early 90s), and found that I loved more of the film's aesthetics than just Jennifer Connelly. The art deco designs, early Hollywood and quasi-noir textures, and the Indiana Jones-like Saturday morning serial tone of the film all struck my fancy, and I loved the story as well, pitting an everyman hero against Nazis in the heartland of America. Plus, there were a bunch of explosions. And Jennifer Connelly.
Unfortunately, The Rocketeer flopped at the box office and was never at the forefront of physical media releases. I hadn't seen it in over 30 years until we recently covered it on Filmshake: The 90s Movies Podcast...but let's just say I rewatched it more than once for the podcast. You can hear us talk about that, as well as Connelly's other 1991 film, Career Opportunities, which is positioned as our punishment film, for good reasons, though it isn't quite terrible. All that and more below, or wherever you get your podcasts!
